Joshua 1:8 (NIV UK)

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

2/3/19 | Not gonna lie I have been struggling to read the Bible for a long time. But when I do read it I do gain something from it. Whether that be laughs; insight, wisdom, understanding, ah ha moments, whatever it may be I do gain when I read the word. BUT this struggle to get into the word is not something that I can keep on entertaining and saying I will work out how to study the Bible effectively and get good in my relationship with God.

A few days ago I thought about studying the Bible with the fruits and the gifts of the spirit in mind. Looking at the scriptures to try and find evidence of the fruits as well as the gifts. I thought about a post (link) I read which was beautiful and it taught me some things,) that made me realise that sometimes when we (I am very much included in this) read the Bible we don’t see some of the key things like love; protection, kindness and even the goodness of God. Because we are maybe a little bit caught up in the story and ticking off our daily reading. – I was a serial Bible plan reader and none of it really stuck in my mind or heart which shows me that I was reading just to tick off having read and completed yet another Bible plan. But I know I need to take the word way more seriously than I do which will drastically change the course of my life and relationship with God.

The reason why I think the fruits and gifts are a good area to keep in mind when reading the Bible is because of the importance they have in our relationship and journey with Christ. We know that the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is shown through the fruits and the power of the Holy Spirit is shown through the gifts. So when we read or study the Bible seeing the evidence of the fruits as well as the gifts of the spirit in the lives of Biblical people is a great way of learning more about life in Christ.

Earlier today I was thinking about when Peter chopped off a man’s ear because he thought he was protecting Jesus. * If the fruit and gifts of the spirit were not at work in Jesus he would not have been able to put that ear back on that man let alone want to do so.
I mention this scripture because there are many people who have claimed to be the returned Jesus even now and a way of knowing if they truly are Jesus (for those who may not be Biblically sound) will be evidenced in the fruits and gifts that are manifest within him. Being able to see that it took a whole lot of love; goodness, kindness, self-control, forbearance and gentleness for Jesus to be able to be in that situation and not lose his cool with the Peter or the ear-less guy, is a way that we can all see and know the difference between the real and a false Jesus (gospel.)

The Fruits.

Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [g]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

You can read my post filled with dictionary definitions on the fruit of the spirit here!

The Gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 (NIV UK)

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b]11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

MESSAGE OF WISDOM | the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement; the quality of being wise.
MESSAGE OF KNOWLEDGE | awareness or familiarity gained by experience of a fact or situation.
~message |a communication from a prophet or preacher, believed to be inspired by God. / a verbal, written, or recorded communication sent to or left for a recipient who cannot be contacted directly.

FAITH | great trust or confidence in something or someone
HEALING | the process of making or becoming sound or healthy again.
MIRACULOUS POWERS | remarkable and bringing very welcome consequences. ~power| the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way.
PROPHECY | a prediction of what will happen in the future

DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN SPIRITS | recognize or treat (someone or something) as different.
~spirit | the non-physical part of a person which is the seat of emotions and character; the soul.

SPEAKING IN DIFFERENT KINDS OF TONGUES | not the same as another or each other; unlike in nature, form, or quality.
INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES. | explain the meaning of (information or actions).
~tongues | a particular language. / used in reference to a person’s style or manner of speaking.

I was listening to a pastor who mentioned that the gifts and the fruits may be separate expressions of the Holy Spirit but they absolutely go hand in hand.

When I think of the gifts of the spirit, – which I have done a lot of lately – I realise that to properly use these gifts in their fullness we also need to have the fruits active within us or we will go about hurting people and turning them away from the church and God. When we prophesy over people’s lives if we do so without love; kindness and gentleness (for e.g.) when we need to be gentle or kind; we can cause people to runaway in fear of what we have told them (privately or publicly.) *side note* the prophetic is something that you have to actively grab with both hands for the sake of the Kingdom as well as your relationship with God. We can all prophesy; scripture says so! (Joel 2:28.) You have to seek and find a SOUND ministry that can teach you all things prophetic to be able to be a partaker in this spiritual gift.

Remember that this is not about making your Bible reading more complex but it is something to keep in mind when you read a life story and want to understand it from a different perspective. Being able to think about the evidence of the Holy Spirit when reading the Old Testament can open your eyes to see that the Holy Spirit has always been active and present even when he wasn’t known as the Holy Spirit.

Happy Reading!

Thank You For Reading & God Bless.

03/03/19 | Last night I began with the anointing at Bethany.

Matthew 26:6-13
Mark 14:1-9
Luke 7:36-50
John 12:1-8

This is what I learned…

Gentleness, kindness and long-suffering / forbearance were very much present in how Jesus dealt with Mary and the men in the room.

Jesus could have responded very differently to Mary; Simon The Leper (STL) and the men in the room. He could have rebuked her, told her not to touch him and asked her to leave because everyone was calling her dirty (basically) but he didn’t do so.

(Sounds like how we respond when we’re in a situation where we have to stand up for what is good or be kind, we refuse to go against the grain out of fear of how they will respond to us!)

He could have rebuked STL but he didn’t do so. Instead he shared a parable which showed that he had prophetic insight as well as wisdom and knowledge of how to handle the situation. This parable silenced STL’s internal dialogue and it also acted as a source of hope for Mary.

…Anytime that anyone tried to tell Mary that she was unclean after that I can imagine she shared that parable to remind herself as well as educate others about forgiveness and God’s love for her.

Jesus also spoke a prophetic word over Mary. “She will be remembered and spoken of every time there is mention of the events in Bethany!” [paraphrased] We speak about her when we talk about the anointing, it’s hard not to, nothing else happened in that room that was written about!

Mary left that interaction with forgiveness and Salvation.

She also left it with a prophetic word spoken over her, which we are partakers in. We remember her as the woman who prepared Jesus for his burial. Her tears and expensive perfume were used for a beautiful lesson for all of us.
