Nice & Kind?

Life by the Spirit
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

I saw this tweet a few months ago and it really struck me because of the simplicity in what she wrote. This made me realise that we as Christians are chasing niceness when the one thing that is a fruit of the spirit is kindness. Jesus did not tell us to be nice to our neighbour, he told us to love our neighbour. The slick nature of language has caused us to think that nice and kind are one and the same when they are actually very different from each other.
Jesus does not expect us to be nice, but he sure does expect us to be kind.
This tweet and post is for those struggling with reconciling with the “mean Christians” label. The bible does not tell us to be nice, it tells us that a fruit of the spirit is kindness.
I know that the one thing that you probably hear over and over is how Christians are the meanest people, they are not nice at all. Do you or they place that label of meanness on those who are not of the Christian faith? I’m sure they don’t. We are not striving to be nice or liked, we are striving to live life evidenced through the fruits that we produce and the fruits that are produced within us. One of those fruits is kindness not niceness.
We are not called to be nice. We are called to be kind, but kindness is a journey that involves so many other aspects of the fruit of the spirit.
Are you telling me that you could be kind to someone [a racist] without love or self-control?
Chase Kindness not niceness.
